Four games, four chances to end a season. Cleveland and New York enter today trailing their American League Division Series 2–0, while Atlanta and San Diego trail their National League Division Series 2–1. That puts the Guardians, Yankees, Braves, and Padres on the brink of elimination. Chicago, Tampa Bay, Los Angeles, and Milwaukee can each advance with a win tonight.

Guardians vs. White Sox — ALDS Game 3

Projected matchup: Daniel Espino vs. Sean Newcomb

Location: Rate Field

Start time: 4 p.m.

Series: White Sox lead, 2–0

Projected score: White Sox 4, Guardians 3

Cleveland turns to Daniel Espino, while Chicago counters with Sean Newcomb. Both are expected to work as openers, making this less of a traditional starting-pitching matchup and more of a test of how each team organizes the innings behind them. Cleveland has Joey Cantillo, Tanner Bibee, Foster Griffin, and essentially its entire pitching staff available as it tries to avoid a sweep.

Chicago’s path to victory

The White Sox should aim to make Cleveland’s pitching plan uncomfortable immediately. A clean first inning would allow the Guardians to move through their preferred matchups. Baserunners, extended at-bats, and an early scoring opportunity could force Cleveland to bring in a more important arm before it wants to.

Chicago does not need Newcomb to behave like a conventional starter. My preferred approach would be to use him for a short, clearly defined assignment, then change the look before Cleveland settles into the matchup. The priority is preventing one big inning, not stretching an opener merely because his pitch count is low.

The White Sox won the first two games 3–0 and 4–3. Those results suggest another close game is a more reasonable expectation than an offensive runaway. Chicago’s route is to keep the game controlled and make Cleveland produce several quality at-bats in succession.

Cleveland’s path to victory

The Guardians should manage this game for today, not tomorrow. With no margin for another loss, the first dangerous inning deserves an aggressive pitching response. Waiting for an opener or bulk pitcher to recover could leave their best available arms entering after the decisive damage.

Offensively, Cleveland needs to create pressure without giving away outs. My approach would be to attack hittable strikes while resisting the temptation to manufacture something on every pitch. Against a changing sequence of pitchers, disciplined at-bats can be more valuable than committing to one opponent-specific plan.

How each team can be eliminated

A Cleveland loss ends the series in a three-game sweep. A win keeps the Guardians alive, but they would still need to win Games 4 and 5. Chicago cannot be eliminated today; the White Sox would have to lose all three remaining games to lose the series.

Predicted opener lines

Daniel Espino — 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 KSean Newcomb — 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

Predicted score: White Sox 4, Guardians 3Projected outcome: Chicago advances, 3–0.

Dodgers vs. Braves — NLDS Game 4

Projected matchup: Tyler Glasnow vs. Tyler Mahle

Location: Truist Park

Start time: 6 p.m.

Series: Dodgers lead, 2–1

Projected score: Dodgers 5, Braves 3

Atlanta is scheduled to start Tyler Mahle, against Tyler Glasnow. Los Angeles enters one win from advancing after winning Game 3, 3–1

Los Angeles’ path to victory

The Dodgers should build their game around Glasnow giving them five or six effective innings without allowing free baserunners to turn isolated hits into crooked numbers. His listed regular-season line includes 98 strikeouts in 74 innings, giving Los Angeles a clear strikeout-based route through difficult situations.

My tactical priority would be strike one rather than chasing strikeouts from the first pitch. When Glasnow gets ahead, he can make Atlanta defend the edges of the zone. When he falls behind, the Braves gain opportunities to wait for a more predictable strike.

Against Mahle, Los Angeles should combine patience with selective early aggression. Automatically taking pitches would let him establish favorable counts; automatically swinging would let him escape stressful innings. The target should be a hittable strike, especially with runners aboard.

Atlanta’s path to victory

Mahle needs to keep the Braves close enough that one productive inning can change the game. His listed season totals—149 innings and 137 strikeouts—give Atlanta a conventional starting option rather than requiring an opener from the beginning.

My ideal Atlanta script is five competitive innings from Mahle, followed by its strongest available relief matchups. However, the elimination situation should shorten the leash if Los Angeles begins stacking baserunners. Preserving a starter’s projected workload matters less than preserving the season.

At the plate, the Braves should force Glasnow to earn swings outside the zone. The goal is not simply to increase his pitch count; it is to reach counts in which he must deliver a strike. A walk followed by extra-base contact would be more valuable than several aggressive but disconnected at-bats.

How each team can be eliminated

Atlanta is eliminated with a loss tonight. A Braves win forces Game 5 at Dodger Stadium on Friday. Los Angeles cannot be eliminated today, but consecutive losses in Games 4 and 5 would end its postseason.

Predicted starting pitcher lines

Tyler Glasnow — 5.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 KTyler Mahle — 5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

Predicted score: Dodgers 5, Braves 3

Projected outcome: Los Angeles advances, 3–1.

Rays vs. Yankees — ALDS Game 3

Projected matchup: Nick Martinez vs. Max Fried

Location: Yankee Stadium

Start time: 8 p.m.

Series: Rays lead, 2–0Projected score: Yankees 4, Rays 2

Tampa Bay hands the ball to Nick Martinez with a chance to finish the series. New York counters with Max Fried, needing a win to extend its season. Martinez enters with a listed 15–6 record and 3.10 ERA; Fried has a listed 2.80 ERA.

The central problem for New York is run production. After scoring 18 runs across its two-game Wild Card sweep of Boston, the Yankees have scored only twice in this series, losing 1–0 and 5–2.

Tampa Bay’s path to victory

Martinez should make the Yankees earn their baserunners. My preferred plan would emphasize strike throwing without repeatedly giving hitters the same location. New York’s need for offense could create impatient swings, but Tampa Bay should not depend on the Yankees chasing.

The Rays’ offense should approach Fried with the same discipline. A close game does not require an early home run. A walk, a well-placed hit, and an extra-base swing can create enough offense if Martinez keeps New York under control.

Tampa Bay should also avoid treating a 2–0 series lead as permission to stretch a pitcher through trouble. The opportunity to finish the series is valuable; a developing middle-inning rally should trigger a timely response.

New York’s path to victory

Fried needs to give the Yankees a stable foundation. My projected route is six strong innings, limited walks, and no inning in which Tampa Bay strings together several baserunners.

The offense must avoid turning urgency into indiscriminate aggression. New York should attack mistakes, but it cannot afford to spend the night trying to rescue the entire series with one swing. Reaching base ahead of an extra-base hit is a more sustainable plan than relying exclusively on solo power.

An early lead would also change the game’s pressure. It would let Fried pitch with some protection and require Tampa Bay to respond rather than simply defend a narrow advantage.

How each team can be eliminated

The Yankees are eliminated with a loss. A win forces Game 4, but New York would still need two more victories to complete the comeback. Tampa Bay cannot be eliminated tonight; the Rays would have to lose Games 3, 4, and 5.

Predicted starting pitcher lines

Nick Martinez — 5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

Max Fried — 6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K

Predicted score: Yankees 4, Rays 2

Projected outcome: New York survives; Tampa Bay leads, 2–1.

Brewers vs. Padres — NLDS Game 4

Projected matchup: Milwaukee starter TBD vs. Walker Buehler

Location: Petco Park

Start time: 10 p.m.

Series: Brewers lead, 2–1Projected score: Padres 4, Brewers 3

San Diego is scheduled to start Walker Buehler, while Milwaukee’s starter remains unlisted on MLB’s probable-pitchers page. That uncertainty matters: the Brewers’ early-inning strategy could change substantially depending on whether they announce a conventional starter or a shorter pitching assignment.

This series has offered almost no separation. Milwaukee won Games 1 and 2 by scores of 3–2 and 4–3, before San Diego stayed alive with a 4–3 Game 3 victory. All three games have been decided by one run.

Milwaukee’s path to victory

The Brewers should try to make Buehler navigate traffic rather than letting him settle into clean innings. His listed regular-season ERA is 4.63, but that number alone does not determine how he will pitch tonight. My approach would be to test his command early and attack mistakes once he has to work with runners aboard.[mlb]

With the starting assignment unresolved, Milwaukee’s broader pitching objective should be preventing a big inning. In a series defined by one-run margins, a timely pitching change or avoided walk could matter as much as a spectacular strikeout.

The Brewers should resist forcing offense simply because they have a chance to clinch. Productive pressure means quality plate appearances and selective advancement, not giving San Diego outs through unnecessary risks.

San Diego’s path to victory

Buehler does not need to dominate for seven innings. My preferred Padres script is five competitive innings that keep Milwaukee within reach, followed by an aggressive bullpen plan.

San Diego should be willing to intervene before trouble becomes a multi-run inning. With another loss ending the season, a starter’s chance to qualify for a win is secondary to finding the best matchup for the next hitter.

Offensively, the Padres need to stay adaptable until Milwaukee’s pitching plan is clear. Against a short assignment, patient at-bats could accelerate the Brewers’ transitions. Against a conventional starter, San Diego should look for mistakes without assuming it must wait until the bullpen enters to score.

How each team can be eliminated

San Diego is eliminated with a loss tonight. A Padres win forces Game 5 in Milwaukee on Friday. The Brewers cannot be eliminated today, but losing both remaining games would end their season.[espn]

Predicted pitching lines

Walker Buehler — 5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

Milwaukee starter — TBD; no individual line projected until the assignment is announced.

Predicted score: Padres 4, Brewers 3

Projected outcome: San Diego survives; series tied, 2–2.

Final Predictions

  • White Sox 4, Guardians 3 — Chicago completes the sweep.

  • Dodgers 5, Braves 3 — Los Angeles closes out the series.

  • Yankees 4, Rays 2 — New York forces Game 4.

  • Padres 4, Brewers 3 — San Diego forces Game 5.

My projected difference tonight is how effectively the trailing teams keep the game manageable through the middle innings. Cleveland faces a complicated opener-and-bullpen assignment, and Atlanta must contain Los Angeles while producing enough offense against Glasnow. I give New York and San Diego slightly better chances to survive at home—but neither prediction changes the underlying stakes: one more loss ends its season.
