Braves vs. Dodgers NLDS: The Pitching Paths to Victory

The 2026 National League Division Series is built around a major imbalance in starting-pitching depth. Los Angeles can use Tarik Skubal, Blake Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Tyler Glasnow in a best-of-five series. Atlanta arrives after a three-game Wild Card Series win over Philadelphia with injuries limiting its rotation, Chris Sale unavailable until at least Game 2, and Tyler Mahle unavailable until Game 3. That makes the Braves’ path much narrower, but not impossible.

The Dodgers hold home-field advantage, with Games 1 and 2 at Dodger Stadium, Games 3 and 4 at Truist Park, and a possible Game 5 back in Los Angeles. Atlanta enters with one major piece of evidence that it can disrupt the Dodgers’ postseason plan: the Braves won their final five regular-season meetings, including a late-August sweep at Truist Park. In the final game of that sweep, Sale threw a five-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts against Yamamoto.

Game 1

Projected matchup: Didier Fuentes vs. Tarik Skubal

Location: Dodger Stadium

Projected score: Dodgers 6, Braves 2

The Dodgers’ path to victory begins with Skubal overpowering a Braves lineup that has already spent a full week in postseason intensity. Atlanta is likely to use young right-hander Didier Fuentes or a similar bullpen-heavy opener because Sale cannot pitch before Game 2 and Mahle cannot pitch before Game 3. The Dodgers have a decisive starting-pitching advantage in this opener.

Skubal’s goal should be to eliminate Atlanta’s left-handed core early. Matt Olson, Michael Harris II, and Drake Baldwin can change a game with one swing, but Skubal’s combination of velocity, a high-quality changeup, and hard slider gives him the equipment to work both sides of the plate. The Dodgers do not need him to throw a complete game. Six dominant innings, limited walks, and no multi-run innings would hand their bullpen a controlled path to the finish.

Los Angeles’ lineup must force Fuentes into stressful innings immediately. A young pitcher in his first major October start cannot be given fast outs. The Dodgers should look for early-count fastballs, attack the middle of the plate, and force Atlanta to reveal its bullpen plan by the fourth or fifth inning. If the Braves have to use key relievers in Game 1, the rotation shortage becomes even more damaging in Game 2.

Atlanta’s route is to avoid a conventional game. The Braves cannot expect Fuentes to match Skubal inning for inning. They need a short opener, multiple bullpen matchups, and a lineup that can capitalize on any command lapse. Atlanta should attack Skubal only when he falls behind, avoid chasing the changeup below the zone, and try to build innings through walks, contact, and hard contact from its middle order.

Predicted Dodgers starting pitcher line:

Tarik Skubal — 6.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 K

Predicted Braves starting pitcher line:

Didier Fuentes — 3.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

Predicted score:

Dodgers 6, Braves 2

Game 2

Projected matchup: Chris Sale vs. Blake Snell

Location: Dodger Stadium

Projected score: Braves 4, Dodgers 3

Game 2 is Atlanta’s chance to change the entire series. Sale should be available after pitching 6 1/3 innings in the Wild Card opener and recording the final four outs in the clinching Game 3 against Philadelphia. His workload creates a question about length, but it also gives Atlanta its only clear frontline-starter advantage in the first two games.

Sale’s late-August start against Los Angeles remains the clearest blueprint for Atlanta. He held the Dodgers to five hits, struck out 11, and completed a shutout in a 1–0 Braves win over Yamamoto. His ability to alter eye levels with the four-seam fastball, slider, and changeup can disrupt a Dodgers lineup built to punish predictable pitching.

The Braves must protect Sale from overextension. He does not need to throw a complete game again. The ideal outcome is five or six strong innings, then a clean bridge to Atlanta’s best relievers. Because he has already appeared twice in the Wild Card Series, the Braves cannot afford an inefficient 100-pitch outing. Strike one, quick outs, and avoiding long at-bats are essential.

Snell is the Dodgers’ Game 2 projection because Yamamoto is expected to be held for Game 3 after a simulated game on Wednesday, while Skubal’s Game 1 assignment preserves him for a potential Game 5. Snell’s stuff gives Los Angeles an enormous ceiling, but the Braves must force him to execute inside the strike zone. His path to dominance comes through strikeouts and chase; Atlanta’s path is patience, traffic, and one big inning.

The Braves should look to drive Snell’s pitch count early. They cannot repeatedly chase his breaking ball or let him work from ahead all night. If they reach the fifth inning with Snell around 85 to 90 pitches, Atlanta can attack the Dodgers’ bullpen before Los Angeles wants to expose its top leverage arms.

Predicted Braves starting pitcher line:

Chris Sale — 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K

Predicted Dodgers starting pitcher line:

Blake Snell — 5.0 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 7 K

Predicted score:

Braves 4, Dodgers 3

Game 3

Projected matchup: Tyler Mahle vs. Yoshinobu Yamamoto

Location: Truist Park

Projected score: Dodgers 4, Braves 1

The series moves to Atlanta tied 1–1, and the Dodgers can h

and the ball to Yamamoto. The projected Game 3 arrangement is designed to give Los Angeles a premier command-and-movement starter after Skubal’s power and Snell’s left-handed strikeout profile. Yamamoto is expected to be available for Game 3 after throwing a simulated game on Wednesday.

Yamamoto enters with a meaningful scar from the August series. Sale beat him in the finale of Atlanta’s sweep, but Yamamoto should not be judged entirely by that one matchup. The Dodgers use him in this spot because his pitch mix allows him to work through a lineup several times without showing hitters the same look. His splitter, curveball, cutter, and fastball create a different problem than Skubal or Snell.

Against Atlanta, Yamamoto must keep the ball away from the left-handed pull power. Olson and Harris are the hitters who can change the balance of the game if Yamamoto leaves something over the plate. The Dodgers’ plan should be to work ahead, keep the splitter beneath the zone only after two strikes, and prevent Atlanta from stacking baserunners before the middle innings.

Mahle gives Atlanta a capable Game 3 option, but he starts with little room for error against Los Angeles. The Dodgers do not need to chase. They can force Mahle to throw strikes, make him navigate deep counts, and wait for mistakes with runners aboard. The Braves need Mahle to give them at least five innings, because burning the bullpen again would make Game 4 almost impossible.

Predicted Dodgers starting pitcher line:

Yoshinobu Yamamoto — 6.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K

Predicted Braves starting pitcher line:

Tyler Mahle — 5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K

Predicted score:

Dodgers 4, Braves 1

Game 4

Projected matchup: Grant Holmes vs. Tyler Glasnow

Location: Truist Park

Projected score: Dodgers 5, Braves 3

If Los Angeles takes Game 3, Game 4 becomes Atlanta’s s

urvival game. The Dodgers can use Glasnow, whose high-velocity fastball and swing-and-miss breaking ball make him a difficult matchup for a lineup that has already faced Skubal, Snell, and Yamamoto. This is the depth advantage that shapes the series: Los Angeles can send another high-upside starter while Atlanta must piece together innings around its tired bullpen.

Atlanta’s likely route involves Grant Holmes as an opener or bulk pitcher. Holmes threw only two innings in the Wild Card clincher, meaning he may be available to cover the first portion of Game 1 or a later game. The Braves’ best version of Game 4 is not Holmes throwing seven innings. It is Atlanta using him for the portion of the lineup he matches best, then turning quickly to favorable bullpen matchups.

The Braves need to make Glasnow inefficient. His ceiling is as high as any starter in the series, but he can be vulnerable when he loses the zone. Atlanta must avoid chasing high fastballs above the letters and breaking balls below the zone. The goal is to create walks, steal bases, and make Glasnow work from the stretch. If Atlanta can force him out after five innings, its offense has a realistic chance to turn the game into a bullpen battle.

The Dodgers should approach Holmes and every Atlanta reliever with disciplined aggression. Do not give the Braves cheap outs in the first two pitches, but attack any fastball in the heart of the zone. Los Angeles needs to create early offense so Glasnow can pitch with a lead and use his strikeout stuff aggressively.

Predicted Dodgers starting pitcher line:

Tyler Glasnow — 5.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 9 K

Predicted Braves starting pitcher line:

Grant Holmes — 3.1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

Predicted score:

Dodgers 5, Braves 3

Game 5

Projected matchup: Chris Sale vs. Tarik Skubal

Location: Dodger Stadium

Projected score: Dodgers 3, Braves 2

If Atlanta survives Game 4, the series returns to Los Angeles for a Game 5 that could become the best pitching matchup of the division round. The projected setup puts Sale against Skubal. Sale’s availability would depend on how heavily Atlanta uses him in Game 2, but a Game 5 appearance would be inevitable if the Braves’ season is on the line.

For Atlanta, Sale must give the team everything he has left. He has already demonstrated that he can dominate elite lineups, and his 2026 performance has placed him among the best starters in the National League. But the Braves cannot assume he will have unlimited length after the Wild Card Series and a Game 2 assignment. Atlanta needs five competitive innings, then it needs its bullpen to hold the line.

The Dodgers’ plan against Sale should be different from August. They cannot chase his slider off the plate or allow him to establish the high fastball without consequence. They must attack strikes early, get runners on base, and avoid trying to hit every pitch out of Dodger Stadium. A Game 5 against Sale may be decided by one mistake, one defensive play, or one swing with runners in scoring position.

Skubal gives the Dodgers the better fresh-arm advantage. With the off days in the series, he can return for a Game 5 on normal rest. His job is to overpower Atlanta early, force the Braves to chase, and hand a late lead to the bullpen. The Braves can beat him only by making him pitch in the strike zone, refusing to give away at-bats, and finding one or two moments to produce damage against his fastball.

Predicted Dodgers starting pitcher line:

Tarik Skubal — 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 10 K

Predicted Braves starting pitcher line:

Chris Sale — 5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K

Predicted score:

Dodgers 3, Braves 2

Final prediction

Atlanta has enough offensive talent and enough high-end ability from Sale to make this series dangerous. The Braves’ five-game regular-season winning streak over Los Angeles and August sweep show that the Dodgers are not invincible in this matchup. Sale’s shutout of Los Angeles also proves that Atlanta has a pitcher capable of taking over a game against this lineup.

But the Dodgers’ advantage is too significant over the full five-game structure. Los Angeles can use Skubal, Snell, Yamamoto, and Glasnow in the first four games, then return to Skubal in a Game 5. Atlanta must rely heavily on Sale, navigate around the limitations of its depleted rotation, and ask its bullpen to cover multiple high-pressure innings across the series.

Dodgers win the series, 3 games to 1.

The most realistic Atlanta route is winning Game 2 behind Sale, then stealing Game 3 at Truist Park behind Mahle and its bullpen. If that does not happen, Los Angeles’ rotation depth will likely overwhelm a Braves staff already stressed by the Wild Card round.
